Why can a beam be seen in the air?

Particles or droplets scatter some light toward the observer. The visible path depends on atmosphere, viewing angle and background, not brightness alone. A photograph’s exposure can make that path look stronger than it appeared in person. See The Path of a Beam.

Are moving lights the same as lasers?

No. They have different optical characteristics and risk profiles. A narrow theatrical beam is not automatically a laser; photographs cannot establish equipment type or safe exposure. Laser use requires specialist assessment under the requirements applicable to the site.

Does a kinetic installation always move physically?

The term can be used broadly. This atlas distinguishes physically moving carriers from apparent motion created by lighting or projected animation. A sequence can combine both. Mechanisms in Motion focuses on objects that change their physical position or form.

What does projection mapping actually mean?

It means aligning imagery to a physical surface. It does not necessarily imply a depth illusion, a building-scale project or an LED screen. Surface texture, ambient light and viewpoint still affect the result. Read Architecture as a Screen.

How do separate systems keep time?

They may use shared references, timecode, programmed cues and system-specific synchronization. Designers also account for processing delays and physical response. Timeline position and video-frame alignment are different concerns. Time Holds It Together explains the layers.

Can DMX control every part of a show safely?

No universal safety claim follows from using DMX. Creative control and protective functions have different responsibilities; machinery requires appropriate specialist systems and assessment. A protocol name is not evidence of a safe overall design.

What should visitors check before attending?

Check official notices about flashing light, haze, sound, access, routes and weather. Ask the organizer about specific access needs and alternative viewing options. This atlas cannot confirm current conditions at a venue or provide individual medical advice.

Are large light shows environmentally neutral?

No such assumption is justified. Energy, transport, equipment lifecycle, operating duration, spill light and wildlife effects all require context-specific consideration. Efficient light sources alone do not establish the impact of an entire event.

Can I use this atlas as an installation guide?

No. It provides educational explanation, not rigging, electrical, laser or machinery instructions, operational advice or certification. Use qualified professionals and current, applicable requirements for any real installation. Our scope statement explains the editorial boundary.
